Dr. Agorastos’ main clinical specialization focuses on cognitive-behavioural psychotherapeutic approaches and clinical evaluation, diagnosis and differential diagnosis, as well as guidelines-guided psychopharmacological treatment of several psychiatric disorders. Main fields of clinical expertise include:

● Anxiety Disorders (panic attacks and panic disorder, agoraphobia, social phobia, generalized anxiety disorder - GAD, specific phobias, etc.)

● Depression (major depression, double depression, treatment resistant depression, dysthymia, etc.)

● Stress- and trauma-related disorders (posttraumatic stress disorder - PTSD, acute stress disorder - ASD, adjustment disorders, etc.)

● Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

● Burnout Syndrome

● Insomnia and other sleep disorders

● Post- and peri-partum depression and psychosis

● Psychiatric comorbidity with chronic diseases (i.e. diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancer)

● Bipolar and psychotic disorders (i.e. schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, mania, bipolar depression)

Dr. Agorastos' current research focus centers in stress neurobiology with particular emphasis on psychoneuroendocrinological, neurophysiological and –immunological aspects of PTSD and depression, as well as in circadian rhythms and chronodisruption. Ongoing research projects investigate the role of biomarkers, inflammation, and neuroendocrine function in stress, depression and PTSD and in particular the CNS and peripheral pathophysiology of cytokines and other hormones, the effect of stress on peripheral inflammation and cardiovascular risk and its impact on HPA-axis, autonomic nervous system and heart dynamics.
